Job Summary:
This position is located in the Voice of America, South Asia Division, Bangla Service. Incumbent serves as the Chief of the Bangla Service having overall managerial, administrative and program responsibilities for daily radio, Internet and TV broadcasts as well as placements on affiliate stations.
This position is NOT covered by an union agreement.
The BBG is conveniently located within walking distance of the Blue, Orange, Yellow and Green Metro lines.
Introduction to Agency: The Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG), an independent federal agency, is an exciting, multicultural organization that encompasses all U.S. civilian international broadcasting. The BBG is comprised of the Voice of America, which delivers high quality, multimedia programming in 44 languages to audiences worldwide; the Office of Cuba Broadcasting (Radio and TV Marti); the International Broadcasting Bureau, which provides transmission, administrative and other support services; and three grantee organizations - Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty; the Middle East Broadcasting Networks (Alhurra TV and Radio Sawa), and Radio Free Asia. Our staff of dedicated professionals serves as an example of a free and independent media, reaching a worldwide audience with news, information, and relevant discussions.
This vacancy is being advertised under Excepted Service procedures and is open to Non-US Citizens Only.

Major Duties:
--Provides editorial direction, exercising editorial responsibility for selecting and approving subject matter to be covered in radio, Internet and TV programs.
--Reviews and edits centrally prepared news and other materials for content, treatment and effect, involving such factors as variety, clarity, listener appeal, etc.
--Develops and coordinates program line-up to ensure accuracy and balance.
--Maintains quality control of programming, monitors radio, Internet and TV broadcasts and offers programming suggestions that will develop creative and effective programming that conforms to VOA Charter and journalistic code.
--Plans and formulates short and long term radio, Internet and TV programs to assure that formats and individual segments exemplify the highest professional broadcast standards.
--Directs and coordinates the work of purchase order vendors (POVs) and a worldwide network of stringers. Manages funds allotted to the Service for POVs and stringers.
--Advises on political, economic, social and cultural developments in Bangladesh of relevance to VOA programming and alerts Division of developments in Bangladesh requiring coverage.
--Recruits and selects staff. Plans and assigns work. Provides both informal and formal feedback on staff performance. Provides advice, counsel and instruction to employees on work and administrative matters. Assures fair and equitable treatment of all employees.

Qualifications:
Basic Requirements for the Position: Applicants must have a minimum of one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade which is directly related to this line of work AND fluency in both English and Bangla.
Specialized Experience is defined as experience in the use of the Bangla language in radio broadcasting, print, TV or Internet journalism. Work must have included writing, editing and/or voicing broadcast material from English into Bangla. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as a reporter, editor or news broadcaster for a recognized news publication; or for a wire service; or for a radio or television station. This experience must have provided a comprehensive knowledge of the history, customs and psychology of the target area people, as well as their political, economic, cultural and social life.
Suitability Determination: If selected, you will be subject to a security investigation to establish your suitability for federal employment. The security investigation will include, among other aspects, review of your credit and legal history.
This position has been designated supervisory, requiring that the selectee, on an initial appointment as a supervisor or manager, serve a one year probationary period.
