Many of the problems that is facing Bangladesh as a nation can be attributed to its population and its thought leaders. The greater public which is now increasingly divided over certain dogma as per their party line are equaly guilty of selective application of their conscience similar to the leaders.
It is apparent from response of people on the incident of the death of the young boy Monir who was brutally murdered when patrol bomb was hurled in his truck by BNP/Jamat loyalists and the killing of Bishwojit, who was slaughtered by Awami league goons.
You will see a big portion of the population will choose to ignore one incident or another based on the party he or she supports. One will be extremely vocal against the injustice in one incident and mumble and fumble to condemn another or will chose to ignore the other one completely and at best dish out a conspiracy theory.
This selective conscience is now one of the greatest moral issue facing the nation and shows that a big part of the population have become so polarized in their support of the dogma preached by one party that they have become incapable to apply objective judgment. This is hurting the nation and dividing the people which is major stumbling block for the nation to prosper.
This great divide in the population were preached by the two parties. Both of which needed a dogma and ideology to hide their looting and plundering of national wealth and public money.
Awami league preached that, as an identity only only a superior cultural form that is Bengali and the Bangaliyana can exist and the father of the nation is Bangabondhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who is the greatest Bengali of 1000 years, who led the war of liberation in 1971 to give birth of the country that we know as Bangladesh.
Honestly, there is not much wrong in these notions as Bangabondhu Sheikh Mujibur is the undisputed person as father of the nation and this nation indeed is formed by a majority of Bangalies apart from few paharis in the hilltracts and Bangladesh was borne on the sacrifice of 3 million lives in the war of 1971.
However, instead of unifying through this mantra Awami League has chosen to divide the country by looking at population through prism of pro and anti-liberation force. Even the people who were borne after 1971 can be termed as anti-liberation force through that lens. The greatest opportunity for Awami League was the tribunal of war crimes, which has widespread support across the population. But, Awami league converted the trial as a weapon to hide their looting and plundering. Each allegation of institutional corruption was shielded by the logic that, that is a ploy to stop the war crimes tribunal by the anti-liberation force. Many people fell for that since Jamat-E-Islami the party who was the mastermind and accomplice of the massacre during liberation war had ascended to power and holds a considerable power in the political spectrum.
So, these group of people feels a compulsion to support Awami League even when they see the looting of national wealth and spread of increasingly powerful hooligan groups supported by AL across all walks of life.
The position of BNP and Jamat is antithesis of what Awami league preaches.
BNP supposedly stand for Bangladeshi Nationalism which stands for prosperity of the country through nation building, pride as Bangladeshi people and stand against the increasing Indian influence in business, culture and protection of economic interest of the country over India, which is seen as weak spot of Awami League. BNP also swings into a milder version of Islamic nationalism when it is politically convenient and depending on the leverage that they are willing offer Jamat, their political ally.
In sincerity, BNP has nothing better or worse to offer in these aspects and other than little empty rhetoric. Awami League and BNP are other side of the same coin. In personal and professional life, Khaleda Zia, the leader of BNP have not displayed any characteristics of an islamic Fundamentalist. Quite a few of the senior leadership of BNP have come from far left background and atheist by belief.
But, a big group of people has fallen for this.
So, the painful death of 14 years old kid Monir , killed after patrol bomb were hurled in his fathers Van by BNP or Shibir supporters are ignored by the same group of people, who had cried for months when the video of Bishwajit another man killed by Awami League goons in broad daylight was published.
The scream and pain of the parents of Monir do not reach their deaf ears, which is only opened when they choose to open it.
This selective conscience has been preached and taught by the most revered thought leaders of the country.
Name of Mr. Jafar Iqbal comes first in mind but you may spare him in this particular reference. Because, Mr. Jafar Iqbal were quite vocal when the incident of Bishwajit took place.
But, you have to think heard where people like Sultana Kamal, Shahriyar Kabir, Anwar Hossain and others hide when RAB kills people in cross fire or general people and BNP leaders get killed by the hand of police and Awami league mastans. In similar incidents in the hands of BNP these group of people would break microphones and TV channels needed to buy new set of mikes to allow them to be heard in full.
Their selective consciousness strips them off from any moral high ground but they are insulated by their support of party faithful who echo’s their statements and selective judgment. In this echo chamber, they protect each other.
This is the most dangerous situation for the country as none of these dogmas have any bearing on people’s lives.
Though, we hide behind the achievements on Millennium development goal but if you strip those fancy goals and convert those bright indicators to real data to see what people earns, you will find that in Bangladesh 30% means 4.8 crore people- earn under 1 dollar which translates to 3000 taka per month and 76.5% people means 12 crore people earn under 2 dollar that is below 4620 taka per month as per government data - If you are living in this country you would know how barely a person can survive on 3000 or 4620 taka per month.
The achievements of RMG industry sweeps under rug the massive inequality and income disparity that exists in the country. Dhaka is the worst city to live, we have the worst judiciary and we have one of the worst corruption- the so called achievements are just a western style of patting back the underachievers – you had been a basket without a bottom, now you have a bottom but you still remain a basket. People are happy to be a basket, where they absorb every garbage the politicians put on them.
Chattering class seems apparently happy to ignore these. In absence of quality entertainment in the soap opera, they have subscribed to daily turn of events that is more dramatic than any Hindi soap opera in Star World- it has all the action, drama, comedy and suspense that one need to be entertained. And, they find immense satisfaction in being part of that comedy show by voicing their own versions by brewing storm in the tea cup.
Every single person is now a mini talk show host with their own interpretation. But, they are blissfully unaware of their rights and blissfully ignorant that they ill served and they fail to demand for good governance and corruption free government and development, which could have brought some prosperity in their lives .
They are happy to be divided, happy to be entertained, happy to be unaware and happy to be screwed and politicians at both side have found a willing nation who would support all their atrocities through selective judgment and as a politician nothing could be more fun than this.
