Today I saw some bloggers are disputing on the issue of the marriageable age of women In Islam. Some gives irrelevant Quotation from Quran and some give quotation without context. More importantly, besides, a debatable issue arise- whether child marriage is permissible or not in Islam. To support it, people bring a hadith from Bukhari that prophet married Ayesha at the years of 6 and consummated the marriage at 9.
Since, I believe that Allah’s law is divine and nothing can supersede it, I will try to show what Allah says about marriageable age of women. What Allah says is true, no matter whoever says anything against it or where it is written.
Make trial of orphans until they reach the age of marriage; if then ye find sound judgment in them, release their property to them (4:6)
And how could you take it while you have gone in unto each other and they have taken from you a solemn covenant? (4:21)
According the two verse mentioned above, to be eligible to get married the women must be reach an minimum age where
1. She has sound judgement (both in physical and mental) (4:6)
2. She is able to maintain her own finance, business, properties etc (4:6)
3. Ability to sign contract (4:21)
So, in short the women must be reach an certain age where she is matured enough to take care of her own properties and able to give free consent and sign contract.
The Quran teaches us that the prophet’s only teaching was Quran, nothing else. He judge by Quran and Allah gave warning the prophet in Quran if he teaches anything besides what Allah says Allah will give him sever punishment. Therefore, we have no reason to believe that the prophet behaved otherwise. Therefore marrying a woman in her 6 years consummated it in her 9 years is nothing but a gross lie and insult to the exalted prophet according to Quran. Since we have Allah’s command in hand, we don’t need to believe such stories against prophet.
